Crixus is his main rival, a man who dreams of nothing but the glory of the Arena because he, and all those who follow, knows nothing else. But some challenges are more fixed, recurring with the characters' themselves. all that he most overcome to find his way back to his wife. From the trials he must go through to become a gladiator, to his first opponent in the Arena being the "champion of Capua", to the inhumane cravings of the place called 'the pits', to battling an fearsome beast whose looks fits his tales of horror etc. There are many challenges our main character faces, and as if it were a video game or a manga, he jumps from one to the next.

And visually, the series improves a lot by the 2nd episode once it is stationed in Batiatus' Ludus, where most of the rest of the season takes place along with the Arena. The CGI blood that splashes onto screen as if paint will be jarring at first, which was most likely a result of very low budgeting (maybe), but the series is able to forge that into its own comic book-esque style. It is interesting plot-wise but visually the series comes off as a poorly done rip-off of 300 (2006). The first episode shows our hero in his homeland of Thrace, on the brink of being betrayed and enslaved by the Roman army, and his wife taken from him by them to suffer the same fate. And it wasn't the most attractive thing at first. Spartacus: Blood and Sand premiered January 22, 2010. And for a series as hardcore as Spartacus is, you might be surprised how much of a driving factor romance is for all these characters and their cause. This is just as much a series about the slave rebellion as it is about being a gladiator, as it is about the Roman higher ups maneuvering their way to power and glory, as it is about avenging the death of lost love ones. So, you know where this story is heading from the get-go, but Spartacus isn't a series that's overly concerned with history, or getting it right, and that is a good thing here because it is guilt-free in forming its own story from the scraps of history that was passed down to us. Spartacus is about the icon himself, the Thracian gladiator who was the leader of the slave rebellion against the Roman Republic in The Third Serville War. A series that was destined for great and unfortunate things, both on and off screen, from the very start, just as proposed for our main character himself.
But over the course of its run, with the 4 installment the series has offered us (Blood and Sand Gods of the Arena Vengeance War of the Damned), even I must admit Spartacus is quite a mixed bag.
It is one of the most distinctive shows because of this alone, and easily one of my favorites of all time. Turn on any episode of Spartacus and you'll know what to expect graphic violence and raunchy sex done with more gore, brutality and explicitness than anything else that we've ever seen on television.
